Clothing preference affects vitamin D status of young women.
“Presented by Ayo Akinwolere. Rickets, caused by a lack of Vitamin D, is a disease believed to have died out as diet improved and slums were demolished. As Inside Out West Midlands discovers, the disease is back, and there is growing evidence that too little Vitamin D can cause a variety of other conditions and even fatalities.”

Background

D3TEX Ltd was formed in November 2007.  We have developed a UK Patented textile application that, when worn, assists in combating vitamin D deficiency in women who dress for cultural and religious beliefs.

For most people, the natural formation of vitamin D in the body is in response to sunlight exposure. However, certain population groups receive little or no sunlight exposure as a result of religious and cultural customs that require women to cover virtually all of their bodies (including face, neck and hands) with clothing acting as a Ultra Violet (UV) blocker.   As a result, these women are extremely prone to  vitamin D deficiency and are at risk of a number of poor health outcomes including osteomalacia (bone softening, bone pain, muscle wastage) and osteoporosis (brittle bones).

Our technology allows the transmission of UV B, from the natural source – sunlight, through the textile to the surface of the skin, whilst the skin is covered and not visible at all.  This facilitates natural the production of vitamin D3 by the body.

The commercial model of the Company is to partner its technology with a manufacturer and distribute under license to sole licensees on a country-by-country model.  D3TEX has identified its primary market to be the member states of the Gulf Corporation Council (GCC) with the epicentre, being the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).  The company has an accessible target market of 5.2 Million people across the GCC.

The Directors believe that the most likely exit will be via a trade sale.
